Our “Spring in Kyoto” itinerary

The 21st of March is Shunbun no Hi, or Spring Equinox Day, in Japan. Day and night are the same length due to the sun rising exactly in the east and setting exactly in the west. In Japan, this day marks a special point in the microseasonal calendar as it signifies precisely mid-Spring. No longer the inklings of the season, but right smack in that special refreshing feeling that only comes in Springtime.

Spring is an important season in Japan - birth or rebirth, the beginning of a new year, and life changes. The school year and the fiscal year begin in Spring. So it’s also known as a time when people move homes and start afresh. Spring is also one of the most beautiful times of the year to visit Kyoto, celebrating flowers of all sorts, but particularly three small tree flowers - plum, peach, and cherry. 

Sharing some of our favorite spots to experience Springtime in Kyoto in our neighborhood. Our shop is located in the Higashiyama ward of Kyoto, a well-preserved historic neighborhood that captures the charm of the old Capital. The neighborhood is abundant in heritage sites such as traditional homes, merchants shops, restaurants, shrines, and temples.

Visit historic Kodai-ji

Kodai-ji is one of the Zen temples of Kyoto, famous for its gardens. In Spring, a beautiful shidare zakura, or weeping cherry tree, blooms above the white sands of the garden.

Stroll along Kamo River

Take a stroll along the many sakura trees and take in the mountain range on all sides, and the green Japanese nightingale sing amongst the trees. 

Enjoy hanami at Maruyama Park 

Hanami, or flower viewing, is one of the most celebrated Spring traditions. And Maruyama Park is one of Kyoto’s most popular hanami spots. During sakura season, the park is festively decorated with colorful lanterns and the many food carts add to the hanami atmosphere.
